On June 3, 2024, Mr. Yuma Tsumura from the Transport Planning & ICT Department at the Planning Division of Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. (OC Global) presented at the 6th Research Presentation Meeting for the Practical Papers of Civil Engineers. Organized by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) Committee on Civil Engineering Consultants and held at Doboku-Building in Tokyo, the meeting is an annual event where consultants and researchers working in the field of civil engineering share their “practical” methods and results.

Presentation by Mr. Tsumura

A Scene from the Practice of Tactical Urbanism

Mr. Tsumura’s presentation was titled “The Practice and Potential of Tactical Urbanism in Dealing with Transportation Issues in Cities in Developing Countries.” He reported the results and lessons learned from a pilot project carried out under the Project for Capacity Development for the Realization of the Urban Transport Master Plan in Kinshasa City / PDTK in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is being led by OC Global. He also presented the potential of tactical urbanism in addressing transport issues in developing countries. Tactical urbanism is the first attempt in the country to link short-term actions by community-based organizations with long-term improvements to public spaces, which is also a pioneering example of JICA’s technical cooperation. This initiative is envisaged to lead to the further spread of tactical urbanism not only in Kinshasa City but also in other cities in the country and other African countries. Other members of the consortium carrying out the Project are INGEROSEC Corporation and Asia Air Survey Co., Ltd.

OC Global hopes to contribute to the realization of a society that is fair to all through the urban planning and transportation planning proposals that we develop in developing countries.
