The First Mactan Bridge is a crucial main arterial supporting the economy of the Metro Cebu region, with a total length of 860 meters. Completed in 1973, it reached its 50th year of service this year. Recognizing its age and importance, a health assessment was conducted to consider the future utilization strategy of the bridge. Based on the survey results, emergency repair works were then carried out. In the Philippines, regular inspections had been conducted based on inspection manuals, but through this project, further education on inspection guidelines for local technicians was provided. Additionally, Japanese steel bridge repair techniques were introduced. There are numerous bridges throughout the country, including the First Mactan Bridge, that have surpassed the 50-year mark, indicating the need for inspections. This OC Global project, utilizing Japanese technology and expertise, sets a vital precedent for local bridge maintenance and management. The recognition of these efforts – technology transfer, capacity building, and international collaboration in safeguarding vital public infrastructure – led to the prestigious award received on this occasion.
