OC Global Makes Capital Participation in Shrimp Aquaculture Business on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia

Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. (OC Global) has made capital participation in PT. Akuakultur Konawe Nusantara (AKN), a shrimp aquaculture business company established on Sulawesi Island, Republic of Indonesia.

This project aims to establish a shrimp aquaculture and supply system with an annual production capacity of 1,300 tons on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. An annual production volume of 1,300 tons is equivalent to approximately 1.3 million 1 kg packs, or approximately 65 million shrimp calculated at 20 g per shrimp. This volume also corresponds to the supply capacity of approximately 50 to 60 40-foot refrigerated containers.

According to publicly available information from Japan’s Fisheries Agency, the largest shrimp aquaculture operations in Japan have an annual production capacity of approximately 100 tons. This project will have a production capacity more than ten times that scale. As Japan depends on imports for the majority of its shrimp demand, the project is expected to contribute to securing a stable source of supply.

This initiative is a strategic undertaking through which OC Global will develop its conventional construction consulting business, centered on design and supervision, into an investment-oriented business model based on infrastructure technologies.

■ Initiative Against the Background of Growing Global Protein Demand

Against the background of global population growth and increasing demand for animal protein, aquaculture is becoming increasingly important as a sustainable means of food supply. In response to these changes in social structure, this project aims to advance the primary industry by applying infrastructure technologies.

■ Contribution to Local Employment and Income Improvement

The target area of this project has limited employment opportunities. Through this business, OC Global will create employment associated with the construction and operation of aquaculture facilities and contribute to income improvement in the region. In addition to pursuing business revenue, OC Global aims to establish a business model that contributes to the sustainable development of the local community.

■ Commercialization of Infrastructure Technologies

OC Global has promoted the development of social infrastructure in countries around the world in fields such as railways, roads and bridges, airports and ports, and water supply and sewerage systems. In this project, OC Global will integrally incorporate its water treatment technologies and construction supervision technologies into the design, construction, and operation of aquaculture facilities, thereby realizing the following initiatives:

  • Environmentally conscious aquaculture using recirculating water treatment
  • Integrated design that takes into account both the construction and operation stages
  • Introduction of quality and schedule management methods cultivated through infrastructure projects

Funding for this project is planned to be raised through Bankers*, a loan-based crowdfunding platform operated by Bankers Co., Ltd.

This project is not merely a new business initiative. Rather, it aims to establish a “technology commercialization model” in which an infrastructure company itself makes an investment and becomes involved from financing through to revenue generation.

■ From Consultant to Business Entity

OC Global will dispatch directors to AKN and directly participate in its management and operations. By going beyond its conventional role as an advisor and becoming a business entity that invests its own capital and assumes business risks, OC Global will promote the following:

  • Integration of technology and revenue generation
  • Project management based on investment recovery
  • Horizontal expansion of overseas investment models

■ Smart Aquaculture Using DX

The aquaculture facility plans to introduce a data management platform that enables real-time monitoring of water quality and shrimp growth conditions. In addition, OC Global will upgrade construction and operation management through remote monitoring from Japan using drone technology. By utilizing sensor technologies and data analysis, the project will optimize operational efficiency and quality. It will also secure traceability and aim to supply high-value-added products that can meet the requirements of export markets.

■ Future Development

Using this project as a model case, OC Global is considering future expansion to an annual production scale of approximately 4,000 tons. Through phased expansion, OC Global aims to increase the scale of the business and establish a sustainable aquaculture model in Southeast Asia.

OC Global will continue to develop investment businesses that integrate infrastructure and primary industry, based on the technical expertise it has cultivated as a construction consultant, and will pursue both sustainable industrial development and revenue-generating business.
