On September 8, 2026, the approximately 1,500 km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting Dadri near Delhi, India, with Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), one of the country’s largest container ports near Mumbai, fully opened, and an opening ceremony was held in Delhi.

The WDFC is a large-scale national project driven by the Government of India and serves as a backbone infrastructure supporting the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) from a logistics perspective. Under long-term support through Japanese ODA loans provided by the Government of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), under the Ministry of Railways, served as the executing agency, with construction carried out through the cooperation of numerous companies and engineers from Japan, India, and beyond. OC Global has been involved in construction supervision as a Project Management Consultant (PMC) for approximately 13 years since late 2013. Although the railway faced numerous technical and management challenges—including harsh terrain and geological conditions, complex interfaces with existing railways, roads, rivers, and urban infrastructure, limited construction space, and coordination with relevant authorities—OC Global supported problem-solving and project implementation across a wide range of fields, including civil engineering, track, bridges, power, and signaling/telecommunications, through design review, construction supervision, quality and safety management, schedule management, contract management, and inter-agency coordination.

The WDFC enables the operation of long-haul, heavy freight trains and double-stack container trains capable of high-capacity freight transport, significantly strengthening the logistics network between the northern inland region centered around Delhi and JNPT, one of India’s largest trading ports. This is expected to yield a wide range of benefits, including reduced freight transit times, increased transport capacity, lower logistics costs, alleviation of congestion on existing railways and roads, and reduced environmental impact through a modal shift from road to rail transport. Furthermore, by connecting the Delhi-Mumbai region—one of India’s largest economic zones—with an efficient logistics network, and supporting industrial development, port logistics, manufacturing, and international trade along its corridor, it represents a national infrastructure that will contribute to the long-term future growth of the Indian economy.
