Port & Harbor Department’s Masatoki Nakanishi and Le Phuong Dong Speak at the 35th PIANC World Congress 2024 in Cape Town

Mr. Masatoki Nakanishi, Senior Project Manager, and Dr. Le Phuong Dong, Project Manager, both from the Port & Harbor Department of the Infrastructure & Industrial Development Division at Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd., attended the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC) 35th World Congress 2024, which was held on April 29 to May 3, 2024, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa.

Presentation by Mr. Nakanishi

Presentation by Dr. Dong

Mr. Nakanishi presented a paper titled “Various problems on executing port building projects in Africa,” which discussed the challenges faced in implementing projects in Africa. Dr. Dong gave a presentation titled “Resilient Port of Future: Case Study on the Sustainability Construction of the Patimban Port Development Project,” which focused on sustainable construction practices. In addition to their presentations, they participated in a technical tour, visiting the research facilities of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa, a networking event within the Japanese delegation, and a port inspection with members of the PIANC-Japan.

PIANC is an international organization established in 1885 and headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It is a non-political, non-profit organization designated as an advisory body to the United Nations. PIANC conducts a wide range of activities, including research and studies on technical issues related to ports and waterways and providing technical assistance to developing countries.

The PIANC World Congress is the organization’s largest event, held every four years. It primarily features presentations of technical papers. This latest congress saw over 700 participants presenting on various topics. From Japan, participants included representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Fisheries Agency, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), members of the PIANC-Japan, construction companies, and consultants, with a total of 38 attendees.
