Co-Hosting an International Seminar on Deep Seaport Construction Technologies with Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in Vietnam
On April 11, 2024, the Port & Harbor Department of the Infrastructure & Industrial Development Division of Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. held an international seminar in collaboration with the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in Hanoi, Vietnam. The seminar, titled “The Latest Achievement in the Frontier Port Engineering: An introduction to the Japanese Most Advanced Technologies in Deep Seaport Construction at the Patimban Port Project” took place at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. Approximately 50 engineers attended the seminar, including Professor Pham Xuan Anh, Vice-Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Director of International Cooperation, and other university representatives from Vietnam, engineering consultants, and construction companies.
At the seminar, we introduced a case study from the Patimban Port Project in Indonesia, where our company is involved in constructing an offshore artificial island. This project highlighted how advanced Japanese technologies were utilized to address soft ground conditions, resulting in shorter construction periods and careful consideration of the environmental impacts. Given that similar deep-seaport projects in Vietnam also require such measures, the seminar facilitated an active exchange of ideas on the applicability of the technologies demonstrated.

At the seminar, representatives from Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd., Dr. Le Phuong Dong, Deputy General Manager of the Port & Harbor Department of the Infrastructure & Industrial Development Division, and Junior Engineer Mr. Ryota Mizuno took the stage. Dr. Dong presented on “The Application of CDM1)/CPM2) Methods in Large-Scale Reclamation Projects,” while Mr. Mizuno discussed the “Construction of Deep-Water Berths on Soft Ground Using the Grid Strut Method3).”
1) CDM (Cement Deep Mixing) Method: A deep mixing treatment method using mechanical agitation that injects slurry-like cementitious hardeners into soft ground, mixes it with the ground, and chemically solidifies it.
2) CPM (Cement Pipe Mixing) Method: A method that adds hardeners when dredging soil is lifted by an air-pressure dredging ship, using the turbulent effects of plug flow within the delivery pipe to mix the dredged soil and hardener.
3) Grid Strut Method: A construction technique that reinforces a root-entered rigid frame structure, made of steel pipe piles and steel sheet piles linked at the top, with diagonal members. This method effectively utilizes the soil’s vertical and horizontal support capacities by distributing external forces in both vertical and horizontal directions, thus enabling the realization of high horizontal rigidity.
