Opening Ceremony for the Palu IV Bridge and Access Road in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia

On February 13, 2026, an opening ceremony was held in Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province, the Republic of Indonesia, for the Programme for the Reconstruction of Palu 4 Bridges and its Access Road, for which Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. (OC Global; Headquarters: Tokyo) provided consulting services ranging from the preparatory survey to detailed design and construction supervision. The ceremony was attended by the Vice Governor of Central Sulawesi Province, the Mayor of Palu City, Mr. Nobuhiro Watanabe, the Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, Mr. Kazuyuki Kakuda, the Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Indonesia Office, among others.

On September 28, 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. Liquefaction and a subsequent tsunami caused the collapse of the Palu IV Bridge, which had spanned the mouth of the Palu River, and severed the coastal road. In response, the Ministry of National Development Planning formulated a recovery master plan, and the Central Sulawesi reconstruction project was launched through technical cooperation provided by JICA.

Under this project, approximately five kilometers of coastal roadway from the western to the eastern part of Palu City has been newly opened to traffic. The reconstructed Palu IV Bridge adopts a three-span continuous prestressed concrete (PC) rigid-frame box girder structure (L = 250 m). By securing a long central span and incorporating a dynamically curved soffit line, the bridge features a highly symbolic and distinctive design.

In addition, balconies on the bridge serve not only as recreational spaces for local residents but also as evacuation areas in the event of a disaster, with stairways installed near the abutments to ensure accessibility. Furthermore, the access road has been elevated to serve as a protective coastal embankment, thereby minimizing potential damage in the event of a similar tsunami. Construction work was carried out by Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd., in collaboration with a local construction company.

By securing east–west transportation within Palu City, the project is expected to contribute to economic recovery and development through improved logistics.
