Smart Island Pilot Project: Ice-Making Plant in Operation and Enhanced Collaboration with the Local Government and a University
Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. (OC Global; Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) and its subsidiary in Indonesia, PT Oriental Consultants Indonesia (PT.OCI), have completed an ice-making plant equipped with solar power generation and other self-generation facilities in Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, under the island development initiative “Smart Island Pilot Project.” Construction commenced in January 2025 and the plant has now begun full-scale operations.
Following the commencement of operations at the plant, a courtesy visit was made to Makassar City on September 12, 2025. During the visit, Mayor Munafri Arifuddin expressed high expectations for the project, stating:“The presence of this ice-making plant will bring positive economic effects, especially for the people of the island. In addition to preserving the quality of fishery products, it will also serve as a catalyst for generating new economic activities on the island.” On September 19, 2025, the Mayor visited the project site on Barang Lompo Island, and the series of activities was reported on the front page of Tribun Timur, a local newspaper in Makassar City, thereby attracting extremely high interest from the local community.

OC Global has concluded a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Hasanuddin University in Indonesia (Headquarters: Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province; Rector: Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc.) to promote cooperation on island development initiatives. At the university’s 69th anniversary ceremony, the university Rector highlighted to the collaboration with OC Global. Going forward, we plan to further strengthen this partnership through measures such as re-signing the MOA with more specific areas of cooperation and establishing a task force within Hasanuddin University.

This project promotes the electrification and development of the fisheries industry on remote islands in South Sulawesi Province. By introducing cold chain facilities powered by renewable energy, the project aim is to improve fisheries productivity and living conditions on the islands off the coast of Makassar City.
OC Global contributes to solving the food-related challenges in the country by supporting the distribution of safe and fresh food through the introduction of cold chain facilities powered by renewable energy (SDG 2). Additionally, the company contributes to the conservation of valuable aquatic resources (SDG 14).
