The “Tactical Transit” implemented on this occasion is a new approach to urban transportation development based on the idea of “Tactical Urbanism,” in which citizens actively participate in improving roads and public spaces. This activity was conducted as a part of the pilot activities within the JICA technical cooperation project and was developed through trials of “Tactical Urbanism,” which were first implemented in the country in 2024.
These activities were conducted through a collaboration among university students, local NGOs, a drivers’ association, and local administrative agencies. The design of the bus shelter wall, which incorporated a message to society regarding transportation safety, and even the painting were conducted by the participants themselves. In Kinshasa City, where raising awareness of transportation safety has been a challenge, these activities provided a valuable opportunity for the participants to engage as stakeholders in efforts to improve their own community. Going forward, based on these experiences, the initiatives are expected to be expanded to other areas within Kinshasa City, and further disseminated to other cities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as to neighboring countries.
