Abidjan, the administrative and economic center of Côte d’Ivoire, serves as the starting point for international corridors within the country and neighboring inland countries. On the other hand, the development of new road infrastructure has lagged behind the high economic growth, and chronic traffic congestion has occurred. The Japan-Côte d’Ivoire Friendship Shinzo Abe Intersection is a key point in the city’s transportation network, where two of Abidjan’s main roads intersect. Congestion at this intersection was recognized as a bottleneck to Côte d’Ivoire’s economic growth. This project was implemented with the aim of improving traffic flow in the city’s transportation network by eliminating traffic congestion at intersections using a two-tiered flyover.
This intersection was named the “Japan-Côte d’Ivoire Friendship Shinzo Abe Intersection” after a meeting between former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the first Japanese Prime Minister to make an official visit to Côte d’Ivoire, and President Ouattara.
