Spearheading Jakarta’s first MRT

Revolutionizing transportation culture in the heart of the Capital.

Challenge

Alleviating traffic congestion in the one of the world’s most congested city with fast and efficient connection to city center

The area of DKI Jakarta has been suffering from serious transportation problems such as chronic traffic congestion, insufficient public transportation, increased ownership of automobiles and motorcycles, a lack of road expansion development, increased air pollution, traffic accidents and so on. Those conditions have been worsening every year and have been causing large economic losses in the daily activities of people, as well as causing a big hindrance to the physical distribution of goods around the area. In order to alleviate such transportation problems, it was urgently requested to develop a comprehensive public transport system, including the development of a large capacity mass transport system.

The MRT north-south corridor will be a total of 21.5 km long and connect Lebak Bulus in the south and Kota in the North of Jakarta. Phase 1 covers 15.7 km, including 13 stations with 9.8 km run on an elevated track and 5.9 km run under the underground tunnel. This first phase is providing a major boost to the city’s public transport capacity, given the importance of connecting the residential suburbs of South Jakarta with the city’s central business district.

Further above, phase 2A consisting of 5.8 km-long with seven additional stations, is now under construction.
